About the Event

Collaboration Beyond Borders for Global Implementation of Genomic Medicine

The Global Genomic Medicine Consortium (G2MC) 8th International Conference themed “Collaboration Beyond Borders for Global Implementation of Genomic Medicine” will be held in Colombo, Sri Lanka, for a combined 4-day workshop/conference on March 31 – April 3, 2025, and will be hosted by the University of Colombo.

The conference takes place at a pivotal time, as genomic medicine transitions from research discoveries to clinical applications with the potential to significantly improve health outcomes. However, the pace of integrating these advancements into healthcare systems varies considerably across the globe.

In this context, the conference aims to:

  1. Bring together key global stakeholders in genomic medicine — scientists, bioinformaticians, epidemiologists, clinicians, healthcare providers, policy analysts, industry, academia, government, and patient advocates, representing a spectrum of perspectives across implementation and integration of genomic medicine in diverse care settings.
  2. Engage the workforce of tomorrow — Early Career Investigators (ECIs, defined as a physician, scientist, or medical professional who has completed training within the past five years) to play leadership roles in this transition from discovery to clinical application.

The Location

Colombo, Sri Lanka

The conference location in Colombo, Sri Lanka will support attendance and participation by a diverse audience, including regional attendees from the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia, representing some regions that are traditionally under-represented in genomic medicine implementation. Nestled in the Indian Ocean, Sri Lanka offers a captivating blend of ancient history, vibrant culture, and stunning natural beauty.

The Venue

University of Colombo

The upcoming conference will be held at the University of Colombo UCFM Tower, a state-of-the-art facility and a hub for medical and scientific events that can accommodate up to 700 attendees. G2MC Conference Co-Chair and dedicated member of the G2MC leadership team, Professor Vajira Dissanayake, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Colombo, arranged for the conference facilities to be donated and held on the University’s campus to facilitate the engagement of the Faculty of Medicine and professional staff. Located near Colombo’s city center and popular attractions like Galle Face Green and the National Museum, the tower offers easy access to both cultural experiences and the Bandaranaike International Airport.

Agenda and Structure

The conference agenda is designed to facilitate a deeper understanding of best practices in genomic medicine, with particular emphasis on implementation in Low and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs), workforce training and development, rare diseases, and pharmacogenomics, to drive advancements in the field and contribute to G2MC Flagship Projects.

The G2MC 8th International Conference is unique in emphasizing implementation through outreach with speakers, attendees, and ECIs representing LMICs and LRSs. This event will enable the sharing of genomic medicine advances through a combination of pre-conference workshops (hands-on training), a dedicated ECI Forum, G2MC Working Group and Flagship Project activities, and expert sessions with panel discussions. This format will facilitate a global exchange of ideas among presenters, attendees, and especially Early Career Investigators (ECIs), promoting collaborative problem-solving to overcome barriers and drive the successful implementation of genomic medicine worldwide.

The conference is dedicated to championing equitable access to genomic medicine globally, with a special emphasis on under-represented populations in low-resource settings.

This conference is organized by G2MC Conference Co-Chairs, Profs. Vajira Dissanayake and George Patrinos, and supported by the G2MC Secretariat.

About G2MC

G2MC is a not-for-profit organization based in the United States that was established in 2016 with the goal of bringing together the global community to enable the implementation of genomic medicine to improve individual and population health. Since its formation, G2MC has held international conferences approximately every 18 months to bring together leaders and experts in the field of genomic medicine from across the globe to explore and discuss advances in genomic medicine and brainstorm solutions to roadblocks. As an outcome of the 2018 International Conference in Capetown, South Africa, G2MC re-defined its mission to focus on low-resource settings – areas where the implementation of genomic medicine in healthcare could intensely improve the lives and health of individuals and communities. The conference location in Colombo, Sri Lanka will support attendance and participation by a diverse audience, including regional attendees from the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia, representing some regions that are traditionally under-represented in genomic medicine implementation.
