Message from the Co-Chairs

Greetings to the IHCC Community,

As we reach the middle of 2022 the IHCC continues to follow the guiding principles of our strategic plan to provide tangible value to our diverse membership.  Our global community of cohorts and leaders continues to work together to generate impactful science and improve health worldwide.

Our IHCC Steering Committee met over five separate interactive sessions in March to strengthen our strategic plan and create a “roadmap” of both near-term objectives and long-range goals.  These meetings were very productive and the outcome builds upon the existing strategic plan, incorporating greater detail and guidance for decision-making and informing future IHCC funding applications.

In May the IHCC submitted an application to the NIH for a 5-year, U24-Genomic Community Resources grant.  The overarching goal for this proposal is to create a global resource for the international scientific community that enables cohorts to revolutionize population health science through a sustainable data infrastructure, a collaborative research environment, and policies and best practices that foster connectivity, interoperability, and reciprocity.   We wish to thank the many IHCC members who contributed to the NIH-U24 application for your dedication to our mission and values.  To continue our commitment to sustainability, we are preparing a complimentary 5-year funding proposal to the Wellcome Trust over the next few months.

The IHCC continues to stimulate impactful science through our broad range of collaborative Pilot Projects that all include low and middle income countries, low resource settings and under-represented cohorts as active participants.  Several scientific publications arising from the Pilot Projects are currently under review at various journals including: COVID-Mental Health, COVI-Gen, BMI-Colon Cancer, Metabolomics, Davos Alzheimer’s Consortium (DAC), and the PRS Pilot.  We congratulate all of the authors for reaching this important milestone,  they are the first of many more discoveries that will emerge from collaborations among IHCC members.

Finally, we want to thank all our IHCC members for participating in our activities and who continue to provide valuable input to the IHCC surveys, workshops, webinars, newsletters, and meetings throughout the year.  You are the focus of these efforts as we endeavor to convene, connect, and catalyze successful scientific collaborations across the IHCC.  We are truly grateful for your time and effort.

As always we welcome your input and guidance – please reach out anytime.

Sincerely, Geoff, Michele, and Peter

IHCC Cohort Spotlight: All of Us Research Program, USA

All of Us Research Program Provides Unprecedented Platform for Health Discoveries

Precision medicine effort leverages diverse participant base and robust data to drive new research

The National Institutes of Health’s All of Us Research Program has made its initial genomic data available to researchers, bringing nearly 100,000 whole genome sequences onto its data analysis platform, the Researcher Workbench. The genomic data is available to registered researchers alongside clinical, lifestyle, and wearable data. This combination of data allows scientists to better understand how genes can cause or influence diseases in the context of other health determinants to ultimately enable more precise approaches to care for all populations. 5th International Cohorts Summit Scheduled for November 2022

Mark your calendars! The 5th IHCC International Cohort Summit (ICS5) is scheduled for the first two weeks in November 2022. It will be a virtual event with keynote speakers, panel discussions, young investigators poster sessions, and much more.

We will provide more information regarding exact dates, summit registration, and abstract submissions in the next few months. Stay tuned for more details!

IHCC Educational Webinar Series

virtual-meeting3

We are halfway through our educational webinar series for this year! Thank you to everyone that has participated in the monthly webinars thus far. IHCC is excited to have Dr. Reza Malekzadeh as our guest speaker for the upcoming webinar on June 28, 2022 at 8:00 AM EST, 1:30 PM UTC, titled  “Using the IHCC to Prevent Premature Death Around the Globe”. Click below to register for this event!

Our aim for this online series is to provide a forum for cohort members to exchange scientific ideas, best practices, and lessons learned; showcase cohorts’ accomplishments, emphasizing LMICs; share international funding opportunities; and more. Each month a different IHCC member will be featured as a guest speaker. Want to preview upcoming talks, register to participate, and even host your own? View our Educational Webinar Series webpage below to learn more and register for upcoming webinars.

IHCC Cohorts Global Survey

strategy

Thank you to all the participants in our IHCC Cohort Members’ Global Survey! We had responses from IHCC 42 cohorts representing more than 21 million participants, and identified common research interests and challenges. We are excited to see your cohorts integrated in the Atlas and looking forward to the next phase. Continue reading to learn more about the survey results.

Organizational Updates

We are pleased to share with you the structural and branding changes happening within IHCC’s parent program, the Global Genomic Medicine Collaborative, as a result of the organization’s growth and opportunities to expand its reach in the genomic medicine arena. These changes include the development of a “parent” organization that will retain the name Global Genomic Medicine Collaborative, with the acronym changing to GGMC. The current Global Genomic Medicine Collaborative will be renamed the Global Genomic Medicine Consortium, keeping the G2MC acronym. Both IHCC and G2MC will be housed under the GGMC organization, opening the opportunity for additional programs to join the GGMC organization. Continue reading to learn more about these changes.

IHCC is a program of GGMC, a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) (tax-exempt in the U.S.) organization. Sponsorships and donations to help support our mission are greatly appreciated.

IHCC VISION
